Children's Legal Aid

Quality Assurance

All children's legal aid work was brought within the scope of the Quality Assurance Scheme in 2004. This is an interim measure to ensure quality assurance.

All firms who wish to carry out this work require to be on the Civil Register, even if they only carry out the criminal aspects of this work. Unless those firms registering also conduct Civil Legal Assistance, they will not be shown on the Civil Register but instead will be shown on a separate register held by SLAB of firms providing children's legal aid.

The peer review for children's legal aid is based on guidelines known as the Children's Peer Review Criteria & Guidance (revised).

Fees

The necessary amendments to the Civil Legal Aid (Scotland) Fees Regulations 1989 were made by the Civil Legal Aid (Scotland) (Fees) Amendment Regulations 2004 which ensured that from 1 July 2004, all children's legal aid work carried out received an increased fee.
