Referendum 2

The Society held a referendum from 11 to 25 May 2010 on the question -

Should the Law Society of Scotland as statutory regulator continue to be responsible for promotion of the interests of, and the representation of, solicitors in Scotland?

The results are as follows:

73% of members who voted, voted in favour of the Society maintaining its dual role. 4,138 solicitors (almost 40% of members) voted in the poll which was carried out under the Society’s constitution by Electoral Reform Services on behalf of the Society.

For a full report see the Society's press release.

Background information

The referendum was called by President of the Glasgow Bar Association on behalf of its members, Govan Law Centre, some members of the WS Society and solicitors from Messrs MacRoberts and Messrs Thompsons. The Council of the Society firmly believes in the Society continuing as a single professional body.

The statements outlining the respective positions of the requisitioners and the Society can be found on the right of this page.
