Introduction

This section includes information on using a solicitor and the robust protections provided for consumers. More details are contained in the Using a Solcitor link to the left. There is also a comprehensive set of leaflets which are available to download from the All Leaflets link to the left. Overviews of the Legal Aid system and Law for Children is also available through the links on the left, as is access to all current and archived consultations of interest to the Society and the profession.

The vast majority of people consulting a solicitor will be satisfied with the service they receive. Occasionally, there is a problem and people may wish to register a complaint. Full details are available in Complaints Against Scottish Solicitors.
 
The Society arranges professional indemnity insurance which operates as a protection for members of the public by providing all Scottish solicitors in private practice with insurance against losses arising out of their negligence. This is known as the Master Policy. Please use this link to view the information sheet on the Master Policy

The Pursuers Panel consists of six solicitors with expertise in dealing with professional negligence claims. The panel assists members of the public with advice about negligence. Click on this link for more information on the Pursuers Panel. 

The Society administers the Scottish Solicitors Guarantee Fund which is a unique consumer protection. The fund, to which Scottish solicitors contribute every year, can be used to reimburse any clients who have suffered monetary loss as a result of the dishonesty of a solicitor or their staff.
