Standards Review

The Society is reviewing standards for solicitors. Having clear and understandable standards is good for both solicitors and clients. It lets the client know what standards to expect and lets the profession know what is expected of them.

There are standards of service, which are about the service provided by a solicitor and/or the solicitor firm and there are standards of conduct, which are about the behaviour of individual solicitors. The aim is to have one set of standards that is clear and open to all.

The Society has recently run a questionnaire to get your views on our progress on standards. The deadline for submitting a response was 30 June 2008. Thank you to everyone who took part. We are currently analysing the responses and will post the results soon.

Using a Solicitor

Solicitors depend for their livelihood on public support and confidence. The Law Society of Scotland and the legal profession aim to ensure that clients receive a high quality service. To this end, the Society issues a Code of Conduct for solicitors.
Because the prospect of dealing with a solicitor for the first time can be daunting to some people, the Society produces a step-by-step guide to how to use the services of a solicitor and what to expect. This leaflet can be downloaded by clicking the related file to the right.

Client relations is a very important aspect of the Society's work. Consumer protection and quality of service are paramount. Most people who use the services of solicitors are satisfied with the service they receive. However, if you are dissatisfied, we view this matter very seriously. Further information on the steps to take can be found in our section Complaints Against Scottish Solicitors.
