Pupils to debate privacy rights in Society tournament
Pupils from schools across Scotland are gearing up to debate
privacy rights in the opening rounds of the Law Society of
Scotland's debating tournament which start today, Tuesday, 29
November 2011.
The Donald Dewar Memorial Debating Tournament, sponsored by
Simpson and Marwick solicitors and Hodder Gibson publishers, will
see 128 teams from schools across the country pit their wits and
powers of persuasion against each other when they debate the motion
'this House believes that the right to privacy is more important
than the freedom of the press' in the first heats of the
competition.
Heather McPhee, education and training development officer at
the Law Society, said: "We've seen record numbers of new entrants
apply to take part in the opening rounds this year which is very
encouraging - particularly as last year's overall winners from
Braes High School in Falkirk were first time entrants.
"The Donald Dewar Debating Tournament gives young people a
chance to consider issues relating to them and a voice to express
their views and opinions. It also helps pupils develop skills and
confidence which will help them in all aspects of their lives."
The opening heats end on December 8.
