We wish to be able to communicate with new lawyers regularly and directly, in the same we we have always communicated with qualified solicitors who are our members. We have historically relied on the support of universities, and training organisations, to pass on information to LLB students, Diploma students, and trainee solicitors. It has also been a challenge for us to make contact with new lawyers who are in between stages.

Policy Statement on Termination of Training Contracts  - As a result of the economic downturn, the Society has recently received a large number of calls from both trainees and training employers seeking guidance on whether a training contract can be terminated by reason of redundancy. The Society has issued a policy statement on the matter. To read the full policy statement click here.

Diploma in Legal Practice - Applications to the Diploma in Legal Practice for Session 2009/2010 and Guidance Notes are now available from your undergraduate institution (past or present). Your undergraduate institution is the institution you will submit your application to, you will not send an application directly to a Diploma provider. The Guidance Note can be found on the right hand side of this page, for further information please see the Diploma section of our website.

The Anniversary Essay Competition (60th anniversary of the Society, 10th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament) - as part of the celebrations this essay competition is open to students in their penultimate/final year of the LLB. The prize is a three week placement courtesy of the Scottish Parliament and a £500 cash prize courtesy of the Society. The closing date is Friday, 27th March 2009. The Society's New Lawyers' Coordinator is moving to another role within the Society.  The replacement role of Development Officer (Education and Training) has been advertised and we will be making an announcement here soon.

Education and Training Consultation - the consultation has closed and further information will be here soon, as the Society works towards its May AGM where a new framework for education, training and CPD will be proposed.

Glasgow University Diploma - this Diploma will run from academic session 2010/2011, and Strathclyde University will run its own Diploma. Further details will follow.....

Recruitment and Retention research - A research project to explore the recruitment and retention patterns of lawyers is underway. Almost 1,000 people including universities, trainees and solicitors from throughout the profession were invited to participate in the research.  The results will be made public very soobn.

2nd careers podcast - The second of a planned suite of careers podcasts, on how to secure a summer placement/traineehip, was recently recorded and will be uploaded on to the New Lawyers' Portal soon. Watch this space.
