We wish to be able to communicate with new lawyers regularly and directly, in the same we we have always communicated with qualified solicitors who are our members. We have historically relied on the support of universities, and training organisations, to pass on information to LLB students, Diploma students, and trainee solicitors. It has also been a challenge for us to make contact with new lawyers who are in between stages.

TANQ Xmas Social
Start the festive season with the TANQ Xmas Social - the social this year will be an informal evening where three panel members will share the benefit of their experiences in the legal profession in a question and answer session.
Have your questions ready for the panel - this is an interactive event and is an opportunity to find out all you ever wanted to know about the highs and lows of practicing law...!
The panel discussion will be followed by a buffet and refreshments and a chance to network and socialise. Visit the TANQ website for further information.

Free CPD for New Lawyers - The autumn programme of FREE CPD for New Lawyers has just been launched. Seminars ranging from 'Instructing Advocates' to Learning to Manage Stress are open to all trainees and newly qualified (up to 5 years PQE) solicitors. Policy Statement on Termination of Training Contracts  - As a result of the economic downturn, the Society has received a large number of calls from both trainees and training employers seeking guidance on whether a training contract can be terminated by reason of redundancy. The Society has issued a policy statement on the matter. To read the full policy statement click here.

Admissions Ceremony - The June Admissions Ceremony was held at the Playfair Library, Old College, at Edinburgh University. At the ceremony 65 people were admitted - 43 females and 19 males. Speeches were delivered by Sheriff Robert Dickson and the Society Chief Executive, Lorna Jack. You can read both speeches by clicking on the documents on right hand side of this page.

The Anniversary Essay Competition (60th anniversary of the Society, 10th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament) - as part of the celebrations this essay competition was open to students in their penultimate/final year of the LLB. The prize was a three week placement courtesy of the Scottish Parliament and a £500 cash prize courtesy of the Society. Click here for to find out who won, and read the winning essay.

The Society have appointed a Development Officer, Education and Training to replace the  New Lawyers' Coordinator, who has moved to another role within the Society.  The new Development Officer, Heather McPhee took up her post in March 2009.

Education and Training Consultation - the consultation has closed and a new framework for education, training  and CPD has was passed at the AGM in May. The changes will be implemented from 2011. Details of the changes to route to qualification can be found at the right of the screen. Further details of the consultation and project plan can be found by following the link.

The Peter Gibson Memorial Fund - A travel scholarship fund set up last year, is looking for applications from people who want to carry out research into consumer policy in another country with a view to applying lessons learned to Scotland. While the trustees are interested in all aspects of consumer policy, they would love to hear from you if you have ideas for reforms in the law that would benefit Scottish consumers, and you think that there are some good practices abroad that merit further investigation.

Glasgow University Diploma - this Diploma will run from academic session 2010/2011, and Strathclyde University will run its own Diploma. Further details will follow.....
