Law Society Exams and Alternative Entry Route

For those who do not wish to obtain a LLB Degree, an alternative route to qualification exists. This involves entering into a three year pre-diploma training contract with a Scottish solicitor and studying for the Society’s professional exams.

It should be noted that people who take this alternative route are still required to obtain a Diploma in Legal Practice and to undertake a two-year post-Diploma traineeship.

PLEASE NOTE that in the past the Law Society of Scotland's professional examinations have been held in May and August.

WITH EFFECT from 1 January 2009 the Law Society of Scotland's professional examinations will be held in FEBRUARY and AUGUST.

Full details of the exam syllabus and reading list can be downloaded here as can a copy of the exam timetable and the application form for examinations.

Copies of past exam question papers are available at the cost of £1 per paper. Please write to the department stating the subject(s) for which you require papers and the quantity and enclose the appropriate remittance.  Cheques should be made payable to 'The Law Society of Scotland'.
